Who Kalima is for

Built for the beginning.

Three kinds of learners keep finding their way to us. You may recognize yourself in one, or in all three at once.

New to Islam

Reverts & recent Muslims

You've taken your shahadah. You want to pray — really pray, in Arabic — and you don't know where to start. Kalima starts with Bismillāh and walks with you from there.

Heritage

Raised Muslim, never Arabic

You can recite from memory. You've never understood the words. Kalima opens the meaning of what you already know — word by word, root by root.

Students

Learners of the language

You want Arabic from its most careful texts. Kalima gives you Quranic vocabulary, tajweed, and pronunciation feedback tuned to the Classical register.

How the AI coaches you

Not magic.
Real speech recognition, tuned for Arabic recitation.

Kalima is built on the same kind of AI that powers Quran memorization for 15 million Muslims worldwide. But unlike those apps, Kalima is built for beginners still learning — with feedback that's specific, gentle, and honest about what it can and can't do yet.

Level 01 · Available now

Word recognition

"Did you say the right words?"

Kalima's AI transcribes what you actually said and compares it to the target ayah or dua. Words you pronounced clearly are confirmed; words it couldn't hear are flagged for practice.

Built on fine-tuned Whisper models — the same family Tarteel uses for their Quran memorization app.

Level 02 · Available now

Confidence highlighting

"How certain was the AI?"

Every word is marked — confident, uncertain, or unclear. No single pass/fail grade. You see exactly which parts of the ayah need another round of practice, and which you've already got.

Uses per-word probability scores from the ASR decoder, mapped to a three-state feedback system.

Level 03 · Coming 2026

Phoneme-level coaching

"Did you pronounce each Arabic sound correctly?"

Phoneme-by-phoneme feedback. "Your ع sounds like an أ — try constricting your throat more." "Your madd needs to hold two more counts." The precision that only a real teacher has offered — until now.

Built on open research (obadx) achieving 0.16% phoneme error rate on annotated Quranic recitation.

Other apps teach you to read Arabic. Tarteel helps you memorize what you've already learned. Kalima is the only app that coaches your recitation, word by word, from your very first Bismillāh.

Content & trust

AI handles the recognition.
Scholars handle the content.

Kalima's AI is world-class at hearing what you said. But *what* you're saying — which dua, which translation, which tajweed rule applies — that is a matter of religious knowledge, not engineering. Every lesson, every translation, every ruling referenced in Kalima is reviewed by qualified scholars from all four madhhabs before it ships.

When the Qari audio, Arabic text, or translation on your screen says something — you can trust it. When a madhhab-specific difference exists, we name it and let you choose.

The learning loop

Four small steps,
every lesson.

Every lesson follows the same rhythm. Listen first. Understand next. Speak when you're ready. Let Kalima guide you — word by word.

  1. 01

    Listen

Hear a dua or ayah recited by a professional Qari — at slow, normal, or fast pace. Whichever helps you settle into the words.

  2. 02

    Understand

Every word in Arabic, transliteration, and translation. Tap any word to see its root letters, meaning, and context.

  3. 03

    Recite aloud

When you feel ready, speak the words. Practice silently first if you need to. There's no rush and no wrong time.

  4. 04

    Kalima coaches you

The AI listens, marks every word you recited as confident or needs-practice, and shows you exactly what to work on. Gentle. Specific. No grades.

What's inside

Built for the
careful reader.

Beyond the AI coach, Kalima is built around the small details that matter for Arabic — accurate tashkeel, tajweed, and treating every word as worth understanding.

Word-by-word exploration

Tap any word to see its root letters, meaning, and every other place it appears in the Quran. Learn vocabulary that stays with you.

Tashkeel precision

Every vowel mark rendered with proper Quranic typography. Amiri Quran font, tuned for the careful reading the Quran asks for.

Tajweed colors

Optional Madinah-Mushaf color coding for recitation rules. Turn it on when you're ready — it's off by default.

Progress without pressure

No streaks that shame you for missing a day. No leaderboards. Just quiet recognition of steady practice.

Dark mode for night prayer

Midnight palette optimized for Tahajjud, late Isha, and Ramadan night recitation. Warm, not harsh.

100+ duas, offline

Al-Fātiḥah, the short surahs, the duas of the Prophet ﷺ — all downloaded, all available without signal.

Every word, treated with care

The same ayah,
any hour of the day.

Kalima knows when you open it. Daylight and late night get different treatment — same words, different mood.

From our beta program. Names changed for privacy.

“I was terrified to recite out loud. Kalima made it safe — the AI listened, marked which words I had right and which to work on, and nothing else. No score, no shame. I've now recited Al-Fātiḥah in my own prayer for the first time.”
— Aisha, reverted in 2024 · Manchester
“I've been praying the same words my whole life without understanding them. Kalima opened that up for me. Every word has a meaning, a root, a place in the Quran. It's changed how I pray.”

Questions

Things people ask.

Is Kalima only for new Muslims? +

Not at all. Reverts are one of our three core audiences, but Kalima is also built for heritage Muslims who can recite without understanding, and for students of the Arabic language who want a Quranic foundation.

If you've ever felt like "I wish I really knew what these words mean" — Kalima is for you.

Do I need to know any Arabic to start? +

No. Kalima starts from zero. The first lesson teaches you to read بِسْمِ اللَّه — *Bismillāh*, the name of God — letter by letter, with gentle audio, transliteration, and meaning.

You'll learn the Arabic alphabet alongside prayer words, not before them. Every new letter appears in a word you actually need.

What exactly can the AI hear? +

Today: Kalima's AI listens to your recitation and transcribes what you said in Arabic. It compares that transcription to the target ayah or dua word by word. It tells you which words it heard confidently, which were uncertain, and which it couldn't make out. That's Levels 1 and 2 of our feedback system.

Coming next year: phoneme-level feedback — the AI will be able to tell you things like "your ع sounds like an أ, try constricting your throat more." That's Level 3, and it's based on open research that has achieved 0.16% phoneme error rate on annotated Quranic recitation.

Will Kalima judge my accent? +

No. Kalima is not a judge. There is no score, no percentage grade, no "75%" under anything you recite. The AI's job is to tell you which words to *practice*, not whether your recitation is "good" or "bad."

Accents are welcome. The Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ himself taught that the Quran was revealed in multiple modes of recitation (*ahruf*). Kalima's model is trained on non-native learners specifically — it's used to learners with accents.

What happens to my voice recordings? +

Audio processing happens on-device where possible. When recordings must go to our servers for analysis, they are processed and deleted within minutes — we do not store your voice.

You can use Kalima without ever granting microphone access. The Listen + Understand flow works fully offline without any speech recognition.

Does Kalima follow a specific madhhab? +

Kalima teaches the core duas and Quran that are agreed upon across all four madhhabs (Hanafi, Shafiʿi, Maliki, Hanbali). Where prayer positions or supplications differ, we note the difference and let you pick your tradition.

All content is reviewed by qualified scholars from multiple schools before shipping.

When is Kalima available? +

We're in private beta. iOS first, with Android following in the months after. Web and iPad versions are on the roadmap.
