Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the Kalima mobile application (app.trykalima.kalima) and the web site at https://trykalima.app (together, "Kalima"). By creating an account or using Kalima you agree to these Terms.

1. Who we are

Kalima is operated from Alexandria, Egypt. Contact: hello@trykalima.app.

2. What Kalima is

Kalima is an AI-assisted learning tool for Arabic recitation, vocabulary, and prayer. It includes recorded recitation by qualified Qaris, written translations and explanations, AI-powered pronunciation feedback, and an AI tutor named "Noor" powered by third-party language models.

Kalima is an educational tool. It is not a substitute for a qualified teacher of Arabic or for scholars of Islamic knowledge. Where rulings or interpretations differ between madhhabs we will note the difference; final religious decisions remain yours, ideally with the guidance of a trusted scholar.

3. Eligibility

You may use Kalima if you are 13 or older. Users under 13 must use Kalima only with the involvement of a parent or guardian who agrees to these Terms on their behalf.

4. Your account

You are responsible for the security of any device used to access Kalima and for any activity under your account. Please notify us at security@trykalima.app if you believe your account has been used without your permission.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use Kalima for any unlawful purpose, or in a way that infringes the rights of others.
  • Use the AI tutor to attempt to extract its system prompt, generate harmful content, impersonate religious authorities, or evade safety measures.
  • Reverse engineer, scrape, resell, or redistribute Kalima, its content, or its API except as expressly permitted.
  • Upload audio you do not have the right to record or share.
  • Interfere with the operation of Kalima or attempt to gain unauthorised access to other accounts or to our infrastructure.

6. Subscriptions and billing

Some features require a paid subscription ("Kalima Premium"). Subscriptions are sold and billed by the Apple App Store or Google Play under their terms. Prices, taxes, and currencies are determined by the platform you subscribe through.

Subscriptions auto-renew until cancelled. You can cancel any time before the next renewal in your App Store or Play Store account; cancellation takes effect at the end of the current paid period and you keep access until then. Refunds are handled by Apple or Google according to their refund policies — we do not process refunds directly.

Free trials, where offered, convert to a paid subscription unless cancelled before the trial ends.

7. Religious content and recitations

The text of the Quran and the words of established duas are part of the Islamic tradition and are not owned by Kalima. We make no claim of ownership over them.

Translations, explanations, audio recordings, illustrations, lesson copy, software, and visual design used in Kalima are owned by Kalima or licensed to us. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use them within the app for your own learning. You may not redistribute, mirror, or republish them without our written permission.

Recitations included in the app are by qualified Qaris and are licensed for in-app playback only.

8. Your content

You retain rights to the audio you record and the messages you write. We process them only as described in our Privacy Policy: voice recordings are deleted within minutes; tutor messages are stored to your account so you can continue conversations.

You grant us the limited right to process your content for the sole purpose of providing Kalima to you (for example, sending audio to our speech-recognition processor or sending tutor messages to our AI provider).

9. AI tutor disclaimer

Noor (the AI tutor) generates responses based on a large language model. It can be wrong, especially on detailed jurisprudential or scholarly questions. Treat its answers as a study companion, not as fatwa or definitive ruling. For specific religious decisions, consult a qualified scholar.

10. Beta features

Some features may be marked "beta" or "coming soon". They may change, be removed, or behave imperfectly. Subscription access does not entitle you to any specific beta feature on a fixed timeline.

11. Termination

You can stop using Kalima at any time and may delete your account from Profile → Delete account or by writing to privacy@trykalima.app. We may suspend or terminate accounts that materially breach these Terms, but we will give notice and a chance to remedy where reasonable.

12. Disclaimers

Kalima is provided "as is" and "as available". To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that Kalima will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that AI feedback will be perfectly accurate.

13. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Kalima's total aggregate liability arising out of or relating to these Terms or your use of Kalima will not exceed the amount you paid us for the subscription period during which the claim arose, or USD 50 if you have not paid us anything. We will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages.

Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law (for example, mandatory consumer protection rights in your country).

14. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify Kalima against any claim brought by a third party arising from your misuse of the app or breach of these Terms, except to the extent caused by us.

15. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Arab Republic of Egypt, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. Where you are a consumer in another country, mandatory consumer-protection laws of your country still apply to the extent they cannot be contracted out of.

16. Changes

We may update these Terms from time to time. If a change is material we will notify you in-app or by email and update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of Kalima after a change means you accept the updated Terms.

17. Apple-specific terms

If you obtained Kalima from the Apple App Store: Apple is not a party to these Terms; the agreement is between you and Kalima. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for Kalima. To the extent of any inconsistency between these Terms and Apple's standard EULA for App Store apps, the more user-favourable provision controls. Apple is a third-party beneficiary of these Terms and may enforce them against you.
